Beartown Road

Lake Luzerne, NY (Warren County)

This dirt road links Queensbury and Lake Luzerne. In an area with several challenging climbs (e.g., Luzerne Mountain Road, Clendon Brook Road), this one is comparatively gentle. Beartown is technically a hamlet in Lake Luzerne, located near the Keenan Reservoir. A cyclist will glimpse occasional camps and cabins in the trees lining the road, but the corridor is mostly a shortcut for adventurous drivers who would prefer a rough Jeep ride to the less jarring Glens Falls Mountain Road. The road parallels Schaeffers Brook at its base and eventually crosses it on a narrow bridge. The grade never exceeds 6% and averages close to 2% so this can be a fun road to bomb down. Just watch out for looser dirt and washboards in the spring.

Still plenty of tread

Vital stats:

2.7 mi +380 ft / -15 ft

Nearby dirt: Smith Mountain Road
